Are called decoilers or payoffs or dereelers, those machines which function is the feeding of material as wire or strip (packaged in coil, bundle or spool) to another working machine.
The working machines can be for example automatic machines for the manufacture of springs, wire straightening machines, cutting to length machines.
The decoilers or payoffs or dereelers can be provided with an horizontal loading plate for the material in coil or bundle, or with a loading device for the material in spool.
In order to increase the productivity and the quality of the working cycle of the lines, for some decades the decoilers have been provided with a variable speed motor (by specific automation), and with self-adjusting features (by specific sensors).
The automation of the decoilers has to adjust the unwinding speed as a function both of the needs of the working machines and the correct layout of the material on the loading plate of the decoilers itself.
The automation of the decoilers must be devised so that it adapts to a wide range of working conditions (for example: a working cycle with a large amount of material at a high speed and a short time stop; a working cycle with a small amount of material and a short time stop; a working cycle which is a combination of the first two ones with even a phase when the material is rewound).
In all the working conditions the decoilers must allow to limit the most the stresses on the material, which could badly influence the uniformity of the production.
For these reasons the possibility to choose the promptness to the changes of speed differently during acceleration than deceleration, must be available.
